Dec 11/12: Drafting Day
- The laptops and tablets aren't cooperating, so you will hand write your essays in class and type them at home. Today you are responsible for writing the first three paragraphs, your introduction and two supporting paragraphs, of your essay in class. Your completed, typed, and polished essay is due December 17th/18th. You will be given one more day next week to work on your essays in class. Here is the rubric that I will use to determine your score. A score of 4=100/100; 3=85/100; 2=70/100; 1=55/100; and 0=0/100.
Dec 15/16: Drafting Day II
- Continue to work on your essay today. Your final draft is due next time, December 17th/18th. Make sure your essay is in MLA format (I am NOT requiring a Works Cited page for this essay). Take a look at the rubric. Ask someone to proof read your essay.
Dec 17/18: The Pedestrian
- Your social media essays are due today! While I am conducting one-on-one writing conferences with students, you need to read "The Pedestrian" and answer the following questions:
- What ominous fact about this future society is foreshadowed, or hinted at, by the "buckling concrete walk" in the first paragraph? As the story develops, what else are you told about the setting of "The Pedestrian"?
- Find the sentences and phrases that at first suggest that Leonard Mead is the only person living in this setting in A.D. 2053. Find the passage that reveals that there are other people living in the streets.
- Explain Leonard Mead's "regressive tendencies."
- Describe the police automaton's response when Mead says he is a writer.
- What do you think Bradbury's purpose was in writing this story? How does the setting he chose help him achieve his purpose? Cite details from the story to support your answers.
- Do you think Bradbury is too pessimistic about technology? Support your claim with evidence from the text and from the real world. Your response to this question should be a half page.
